FAQ

What is a Hybrid
Vehicle ?

And is a Hybrid
an electric
vehicle ?

A Hybrid vehicle is one that uses more than one source of energy for propulsion.

Parallel hybrid's such as the Toyota Prius are the most popular. In a "Parallel Hybrid" both an electric motor/generator, and a gasoline engine can power the drivetrain. Future hybrid's will be "Series Hybrids". Known also as plug in hybrids because you plug them in at night to charge. In this type of hybrid batteries power an electric motor which is the only source of power to the drivetrain. Once the batteries are drained a gas motor comes on and turns a generator to both charge the batteries and continue to power the electric motor as you continue down the road.

Series hybrids can be considered electric vehicles because they are plugged in to charge and for the most part if your commuting is limited to 40 miles or less between charges the gas engine may never have to come on.
What is a Hydrogen or other fuel cell
Vehicle ?

And is it considered an electric
vehicle ?

A fuel cell vehicle can be considered an electric vehicle because the power train or wheels will be powered by an electric motor or motors.

Fuel cell vehicles use a fuel of some type, in most cases to generate electricity to power the drivetrain via electric motor. Some fuel cell vehicles may or may not use batteries to store power. The objective remains the same though. To produce near zero emissions and avoid use of fossil fuels
